Vancouver Paralympic Winter Games
Mar 12 to 21, 2010
The Paralympic Games are the second largest sport event in the world and the largest elite multi-sport event for athletes with a disability, involving athletes from several disability categories. The movement has grown dramatically since its first days. The number of athletes participating in Paralympic Games and inspiring spectators from all over the world has increased from 400 athletes from 23 countries in Rome in 1960 to 3,951 athletes from 146 countries in Beijing in 2008. In Vancouver, around 600 Winter athletes from 45 countries are expected to compete for medals. The Paralympic Games are held every four years and are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). They have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games and the Albertville 1992 Paralympic Winter Games they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympics.
Vancouver has repeatedly been rated as one of the most livable cities in the world. Located in British Columbia on the west coast of Canada it is here that you may spend the morning skiing, lunch at a world-class restaurant, enjoy an ocean bike ride along the seawall on a sunny afternoon, and take in a theatrical production in the evening. Over half a million people call Vancouver home. There are a multitude of cultures and languages from around the world that comprise the residents of Vancouver and the City is renowned for creating ways to celebrate that diversity.
Whistler is a world class resort town known for its skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. Located 78 miles north of Vancouver in the Coast Mountains in British Columbia, it has repeatedly been voted a top ski destination by ski magazines since the mid 1990’s. First named London Mountain for the heavy fogs and rain, the area acquired the nickname “whistler” because of the warning cry of the hoary marmot that lives in the area. In the 1960’s the name was officially changed to Garibaldi Whistler Mountain. Activities are not in short supply in Whistler. Just in Whistler Village, an award winning pedestrian village, there are more than 200 shops and world class restaurants to choose from. Add in skiing, relaxing by the fire, snow shoeing, even winter zip lining and you’ll be able to find plenty to do while visiting.
